Lightning Protection Introduction:
A surge arrester is a device used on electrical power systems to protect all other equipment in a network system from the damaging effect of lightning, system faults or switching, the gapless type surge arrester having metal oxide varistors (MOVs) have been efficiently used for power system protection. The typical lightning arrester also known as surge arrester has a high voltage terminal and a ground terminal. When a lightning surge (either by direct stroke or induction from a nearby stroke) or switching surge travels down the power system to the arrester, the current from the surge is diverted around the protected insulation in most cases to earth.

With superior designed non-linear voltage-current characteristics, high quality, reliability MOVs type encapsulated in polymer housing surge arresters offer such special features inherent in gap-less structure as quick response to surge voltage, high energy dissipation capability, safe operation, compactness / lightweight and freedom from pollution and economy. By the same technology as distribution system, the low voltage gapless surge arrester with high quality of MOVs block are well proved to PEA low voltage system before supplying the electricity to residential customers.

As the use of products and equipment with components and insulation systems vulnerable to voltage surges and spikes continues to increase, the requirement for surge arresters to protect against the effects due to lightning strikes, switching phenomenon, etc., continues to extend from HV transmission and distribution systems to communication and computer network system as well.

IEC Publication 60099-4: 1991 Surge arresters-Part 4: Metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps for ac systems.
IEC Publication 61109: 1992 Composite insulators for ac overhead lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1000 V. Definitions, test methods and acceptance criteria.
IEC Publication 61643-1:1998 Surge protective devices connected to low-voltage power distribution systems. Part 1: Performance requirements and testing methods.
